“Sounding good, Murray.” Aidan draped his stethoscope around his shoulders, smoothed his hand over the little beagle’s neck and head examining him for lumps, then took a look at his mouth. Slipping the dog a small treat, Aidan turned to his owner. “You’re doing a great job with him, Vern. Time to get his teeth cleaned though. We did his bloodwork today, so all you need is an appointment. You can set that up with Bev on the way out.”

“Thanks, Doc.”

“You’re very welcome. How’s Helen doing after her hip replacement?”

The older man clipped Murray’s leash on him. “Better now than she was. She sure doesn’t like slowing down.”

“Tell her she’ll be running around again in no time.” Aidan exited the small examination room into the back area. He scrubbed his hands, then dictated a few notes to add to Murray’s file, a time-saving technical device he’d convinced Karl was worth the investment.

Had Leah arrived yet? He sure hoped she could help Bev figure out Karl’s accounting system. Aidan strode into the office.

Bev stood at the reception window, her graying head bobbing as she talked and laughed with Vern, who’d been one of her high school classmates.

Leah sat at Bev’s desk, her dark hair cascading around her shoulders, partially draping her pretty face and parting to expose her long, creamy neck.

Aidan stopped dead.

She looked up, her eyes widening behind her glasses when she saw him.

“You… look… amazing,” he said.

She smiled. “Thanks.”

“Your hair is…” He just stared at her.

“Down?”

“Beautiful!”

“It’s amazing what warm, running water can do for a gal,” she quipped.

“You smell fantastic, too.”

“No lingering barn odors?”

He took a deep breath of her subtle and very captivating perfume. “Absolutely none.”

“Thanks for inviting me to use your place to tidy up.”

“Of course.”

Bev cleared her throat.

He dragged his gaze from Leah to focus on Bev. “Doesn’t she look great?”

“She does. Leah, I think you need to get out of the barn more often.”

Leah flushed a soft shade of pink.

Just when Aidan had thought she couldn’t look any prettier. But she was embarrassed, so maybe he’d keep that observation to himself. “Making sense of Karl’s system?”

“No problems. I’m just setting up accounts and transferring this year’s numbers to Bev’s computer, and she’ll be good to go.”

“She’s been explaining it to me,” Bev said. “She’s smart as well as pretty.”

Aidan smiled. “She is.”

“Candace James is waiting in exam room two with her big greyhound. Florence is due for her regular exam. Will you be ready anytime soon?”

“Absolutely.” Taking Florence’s folder from Bev, Aidan headed for exam room two.

He was in for it now. Bev loved to tease, and she was never going to let him live down his reaction to Leah, was she?

The morning seemed to drag by as Aidan handled appointments with only an occasional glimpse of Leah working with Bev in the office. Just knowing she was there kept him on edge. And anticipating time together without a million chores demanding their attention made him a little nervous.

But a great lunch was definitely called for.
